New M Magazine presents fascinating photographic projects by acclaimed Leica photographers

The latest issue of M Magazine is now available and presents a wide variety of articles from the world of Leica rangefinder photography. The now fifth issue of the magazine features a ‘best of’ historic photographs by Ernesto Bazan, captivating reportage work by Peter Bauza and José Colón, impressive images captured by Fred Mortagne and Giovanni del Brenna and emotive insights into the life of Russian children in a summer camp by Claudine Doury. What’s more, an essay celebrating the 10th anniversary of digital M-Photography leads readers through the history of the system and presents its latest milestone – the Leica M10.

Ernesto Bazan – Cuba, mon amour

Ernesto Bazan shared the life, loves and troubles of the Cubans from 1992 until he was forced to leave the country in 2006. In his 14 years on the island, the photographer captured images with his Leica M6 that see behind the veil of popular clichés and reveal the soul of a nation. Ten years after leaving, he looks back on life in his personal paradise. A dialogue about hope, sentimentality, memories and patience.

Peter Bauza – Copacabana Palace

One city, two worlds: Over the past few years, Brazil has hosted several major sporting events, amongst them the FIFA World Cup and the Olympic Games. While winners celebrated their victories in Rio de Janeiro, hundreds of families lead their lives as squatters in unfinished buildings only a couple of kilometres from the city. The images captured by Peter Bauza with his Leica M (Type 240) show the realities of this seemingly surrealistic no man’s land.

José Colón – Viva la Virgen!

They ride on horses, in gloriously decorated carriages, on simple donkey carts or come on foot: shortly before Whitsuntide, hundreds of brotherhoods make their way to the village of El Rocio to honour the Virgin Mary. With more than a million people taking part, the pilgrimage is the largest in Spain – and is simultaneously an enormous party. Here, Spanish photographer José Colón portrays a typical tradition of his Andalusian home with his Leica M9.

Fred Mortagne – Modern Lines

Fred Mortagne is one of the best known photographers of the international skateboarding community. The natural habitat of skaters is the big city – and French photographer Fred Mortagne pays his own, special homage to it in this series. In a series of spectacular images captured with his Leica M Monochrom, Mortagne, known in the scene only as ‘French Fred’, shows his exceptional eye for extraordinary perspectives and geometries in the urban jungle.

Giovanni Del Brenna – Speculation

The people captured by Giovanni Del Brenna’s camera in the streets of Paris are apparently faceless. They are not even aware they have been photographed. In his portfolio, Del Brenna focuses on his – and our – ignorance of realities in the light of the social masquerades of how people dress in public. With his Leica M (Type 240), he sets his focus on clothing and other details that allow us to speculate on how much they reveal about each individual subject.

Claudine Doury – Summer in Crimea

Artek, founded in Crimea as a summer camp for children in 1925, was extended during Khrushchev’s regime and, with its innovative architectural language, was one of the prestige objects of the First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union. Spending the summer there was the dream of many young people in the Soviet Union. Today, the ‘Young Pioneer’s Camp’ is experiencing a renaissance. French photographer Claudine Doury discovered a haven of nostalgia on several trips to the camp with her Leica M6.
